BENICIA — CALIFORNIA58 LOCAL. Benicia’s East Fourth, East Fifth and East L Streets Streetscape Improvements project is intended to make the city’s Eastern Gateway area easier to travel on foot and by bicycle. The City Council approved the construction contract July 21, 2026, for $395,644.
Public infrastructure and community impact
The work area adjoins the East Fifth Street Priority Development Area and a city-owned housing opportunity parcel at East L and East Fourth. The city notes that some old sidewalks there are incomplete, narrow or obstructed by utility poles.
Planned improvements include twelve-foot-wide sidewalks, accessible pedestrian features, curb extensions, crosswalk markings, bicycle racks, planting areas and modified street parking. A $261,000 One Bay Area Grant supports the project, with local gas-tax funds contributing the match.
City documents anticipated a September–November 2026 work period with N G Builder Company as contractor. Public Works notes that pedestrian detours and light traffic controls may be needed during construction.
These changes may improve access to future housing and businesses, but the construction schedule should not be treated as proof that every improvement has already opened. Residents may contact engineering@ci.benicia.ca.us for project-specific status and access questions.
